TULSA, OK -- The Tulsa Zoo spilled the beans about Saint Patrick and snakes on Wednesday.
Legend has it the patron Saint of Ireland rounded up and banished all snakes from the island after being attacked by them. While it's a great story, zookeepers say they know the real reason there are no snakes in Ireland.
"Whenever snakes started radiating out what was at the time Gondwanaland, Ireland was completely underwater, so there was no possible way for snakes to actually inhabit the island," said Barry Downer, Tulsa Zoo.
And, they say fossil records prove there were never any snakes for Saint Patrick to banish.
