SAND SPRINGS, OK -- Despite efforts to keep it open, the Gerdau-Ameristeel plant in Sand Springs will stay closed.

Company executives met with the Oklahoma Treasurer and state Commerce Department on Thursday to see if some kind of state incentive package could help in re-opening the facility.

In the end, it was decided that weak demand for rebar and the cost of rehabilitating the plant would make any rescue plan unproductive.
