Snow Closes Dozens Of NE Oklahoma Schools Monday

UNDATED -- Another round of snow is causing problems on roadways, forcing some northeastern Oklahoma schools to cancel classes for Monday, January 4.

Collinsville students will get to enjoy one more day of winter break. The district is among dozens that have canceled classes for Monday.

Collinsville and surrounding communities got several inches of snow, which started Saturday night and lasted through Sunday morning. Combine that with icy roads, and officials say it's enough to keep the students at home.

Collinsville Superintendent Terry Due was excited about Monday. It was supposed to be his first day on the job, but another round of snow has forced him to push back his debut until at least Tuesday.

"Some of the parents are ready to have the kids back in school, but you've got to do safety first in this kind of a situation," said Terry Due, Collinsville Superintendent.

Due says he consulted with superintendents at Oologah, Sperry and Skiatook. They agreed the snowy conditions, while not debilitating, are not worth the risks that would come with keeping school open.

It's not the main roads that are causing the problems in Collinsville, they're ok. It's side, rural streets with all the leftover snow and ice. That's the reason school is going to be closed on Monday.

"The country roads are in bad shape right now. The temperature has fallen below freezing where you don't want to chance on having kids stranded out in the cold," said Terry Due.

Not that students who were set to return from winter break Monday, are complaining.

"Pretty excited, I don't want to go to school," said Brook Sanchez, a Sperry student.

Thanks to more snow, combined with bone-numbing temperatures, they won't have to.

"If it was 35, 36 degrees and it was going to melt away by noon, we might take a chance on it. But it doesn't appear it's going to get above freezing for the next day or two," said Terry Due.
