TULSA, OK -- There is regular old Christmas gift shopping, and then there is shopping for a gift that is also an investment.
Moody's Jewelry has the perfect gift this holiday, it also evokes memories of Henry Mancini.
Store manager Jason Delong said he had something he wanted to show The News On 6 -- a very rare 6 1/2 carat natural pink diamond with two carats or surrounding diamonds, so 8 1/2 carats in all.
Diamonds of any color other than white are unusual, pink ones are very rare. For Moody's it is a first.
"In our 60-year history we have never had anything of this magnitude and we are giddy with excitement," Delong said.
According to Delong, rare diamonds like this are created the same way as every other diamond.
"Deep in the earth, great heat and pressure are what creates a diamond," Delong said.
More extreme conditions are what create rare pink ones. Before cutting and polishing, the original stone might have been as much as twice its size.
Delong says the ring is no novelty, they brought it in to sell.
"We brought this in for someone in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and they're here to have the opportunity to own something that rare and that unique," said Delong.
Oh, the price? Just a little under half a million dollars.
"If you mention Rick Wells when you come in there's a little discount," Delong said.
Considering a smaller pink diamond sold at auction last week for more than $10 million, it is a great investment.
The diamond is not normally on display, but can be brought out for potential buyers at the 71st & Lewis location.
