BIXBY, OK -- Veteran's Day is an opportunity to honor the men and women who have served our country and those who are currently in uniform.
To say Monica McCann of Bixby comes from a military family is an understatement. Her dad and uncles served during World War Two. Her husband was in the Marine Corps. Her brother in Desert Storm.
McCann now has four sons who serve.
"They defend this country no matter what," said Monica McCann.
McCann says she is proud of her family's military service.
"It was a total shock, that I would wind up with four of them in the service at the same time," said McCann.
Soldiers Michael and Isaac are at Fort Hood, with Isaac deploying to Afghanistan soon. Reuben is in Iraq right now. Their younger brother, John, is a Marine in Okinawa.
"They're proud of our country, of the stand that we're taking to protect people and they do that," said McCann.
For a mom back home there is four times the pride, but also four times the worry.
"It's a double-edged sword. I'm very proud of my boys, their accomplishments, their decision to serve their country. But they are not here. Their decision takes them all over the world," said McCann.
McCann says that's the hardest part, not being able to get them all together at one place at one time.
"E-mail is wonderful and it makes for instantaneous conversation. But there's nothing like the sound of your child’s voice. You know at that moment they are fine," said McCann.
It will likely be three more years before they can all reunite again. For McCann, she'll keep worrying about them, but also look forward to when that day comes.
"I am very proud of my boys. I'm extremely, extremely proud," said McCann.
As if there isn't enough worry for a mom with four sons in the military, two of her sons are stationed at Fort Hood, Texas where last week's mass shooting took place.
