SAND SPRINGS, OK -- In August, a Sand Springs steel mill filed a WARN (Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification) concerning employment at the Sand Springs Gerdau Ameristeel plant.
That means they had 60 days notice regarding layoff due to shutdown of the plant. The 60th day is this Saturday.
Friday is the last day for anyone no longer needed for retention at the plant to be let go.
This impacts between 50 and 60 current employees.
After Saturday, there will only be 30 employees at the plant.
Gerdau Ameristeel says it is still in negotiations with the state of Oklahoma regarding tax incentives to upgrade the plant and keep it in Oklahoma.

The company says they will notify Oklahoma on whether they will do then upgrades and pursue the state tax incentives by Thanksgiving.
This will give the state time to draft and pass the legislation needed to award Gerdau Ameristeel the tax incentives.
