TULSA, OK -- Some kids are going back to school with free backpacks. All 1,000 students at Kendall-Whittier Elementary School received free backpacks filled with school supplies on Tuesday.
The gifts were a part of a school adoption program between the University of Tulsa and the elementary. Student athletes were on hand to help distribute the educational gift.
"The athletes come and play with them and give them a significant adult in their life, but they also talk to them about the importance of academics and staying in school," said Judy Feary with Kendall-Whittier Elementary.
Tuesday's event is just one of many that TU will be involved in this school year.
