There was an initial report of a woman and infant inside the structure at the time of the fire, but that was inaccurate, crews said. The multiple call fire resulted in the response of 11 fire companies, two district chiefs and two fire investigators.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire showing from the back of the building.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire, crews said. One was a heat-related injury and the other was an injury when a ceiling collapsed. EMSA checked the firefighters out and they were able to return to work.
The church was destroyed. Damage is estimated at $75,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
