TULSA, OK -- The five-year-old boy struck near Promenade Mall yesterday had surgery Friday night for a skull fracture and other injuries, according to Tulsa Police Captain Karen Tipler. He was in very critical condition, Tipler said.
The investigation is underway into the auto-pedestrian accident. It happened just before 5 o'clock on Friday afternoon.
Witnesses say that the boy was barefoot, alone and looked frightened while standing on the corner. They say he suddenly darted into the intersection of 41st and Yale where was hit by an SUV.
"We grabbed a towel out of our car and came up on him, tried to get a towel underneath him a little bit to keep him off the hot ground. He was hurt pretty bad," said witness Becky Espinosa.
Police report the boy has autism. He went missing from his neighborhood and people were out searching for him when the accident happened. He is reported to be five years old.
