OWASSO, OK -- Most of us remember our first car, but not many of us still have it.

A retired newspaper editor and publisher in Owasso not only remembered his first car, but when he got the chance later in life to buy one just like it, he couldn't resist.

John Fenrich listens to Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys while driving his 1960 Austin Healey Sprite. It's like a way-back machine with wheels.

It's not Fenrich's first car, but it's just like the one he bought in high school with his paper route money.

"It was a red Bugeye Sprite almost identical to this one," Fenrich said. "But my dad and I had to drag it home on the end of a rope because it wouldn't run."

He drove it through high school and college, and like most first cars it got replaced, but he never lost the love for that little car and later in life he found a little red Bugeye Sprite just like his first one.

"In England they don't call them Bugeye Sprites," he said. "They call them Frogeye Sprites."

The Sprite has become sort of the mascot for Fenrich's other passion, chili.

"I've won enough cookoffs that I've been to the World Championships seven times," he said.
