ST. LOUIS (AP) - Missouri's governor is set to tour areas damaged by yesterday's powerful storms in the Midweast and South.

Residents are cleaning up after the storms splintered homes, knocked out power to thousands and left five people dead.

Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed in Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri. About 150,000 customers in Missouri were left without power at the height of outages.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency.

Two people were killed near Poplar Bluff, when wind knocked a tree onto an SUV. Elsewhere, a man had a fatal heart attack after he and his wife were sucked from their home by a tornado and thrown hundreds of feet.

A woman was killed in southeast Kansas when a mobile home was blown off its foundation.

And in central Kentucky, a woman was found dead in a pond after a strong thunderstorm chugged through the area.

In southern Illinois, the storm system tore roofs off buildings.
