TULSA, OK -- Identity theft affects millions of people. On Tuesday, some people in Tulsa got a little extra peace of mind. They were able to drop off their personal documents at the Greenwood Cultural Center to be shredded for free.
The program was made possible with the help of Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson, AARP Oklahoma and a shredding firm called Shred-It.
Edmondson says it's a little thing that can save a lot of time.
"Each victim spends an average of 600 hours recovering from the damage done by identify theft, trying to correct credit card balances, trying to correct credit ratings, all of the things that a consumer has to do once their identity has been stolen," said Attorney General Drew Edmondson.
Tuesday was the first time this particular shredding event was held in Tulsa. Last year in Oklahoma City, the event shredded 24 tons of documents.
