A highway patrol trooper killed in the line of duty was remembered on Thursday. A Sand Springs bridge over the Arkansas River is now the "The Lieutenant Pat Grimes Memorial Bridge."
Lieutenant Grimes, Troopers Houston "Pappy" Summers and Billy Young were killed during a shootout with two McAlester prison escapees in 1978.
Grimes' twin brother Mike, who was also a trooper, says renaming the bridge in his brother's honor means a lot to the family. But, he says it doesn't just honor his brother.
"People run from situations, troopers and all law enforcement run to those situations to protect the lives of others. That's the significant thing that occurred out of this, is we realize that they do this every day," said Mike Grimes.
The fugitives were also shot and killed, ending a 34-day killing spree that spanned four states and left more than nine people dead.
