The largest private gun collection in the nation is now at the center of a local lawsuit. The J.M. Davis Foundation in Claremore, filed suit on Tuesday against the J.M. Davis Commission and State of Oklahoma, for violating a long-standing contract.
The commission and state were put in charge of maintaining Davis' gun collection back in the 1960s. But, a 2005 audit found that hasn't happened.
"There's been a long, unfortunately, history of neglect, mismanagement and even theft of these guns over the past 50 years," said J.M. Davis Foundation attorney Steve Peters.
The foundation wants the guns back. It wants to inventory them, check their conditions, and then sell them to benefit the City of Claremore.
The collection is estimated to be worth anywhere between $10 million and $30 million.
