Green Country memorialized one of its greatest heroes at Floral Haven on Saturday. A life-size bronze sculpture of Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Childers was unveiled.

The Broken Arrow native received the Medal of Honor in 1943 for his heroic charge against a Nazi machine gun nest.

Childers was the first Native American to earn the Medal of Honor during World War II. He is also one of only two Green Country soldiers to receive the nation's highest honor for valor against an enemy.
