Oklahoma Second District Congressman Dan Boren is pushing a bill in Congress that calls for an official apology from the U.S. government to Native Americans.
Boren has told Indian officials the bill acknowledges and apologizes for violence and policies such as the forced relocation of Indians. It also recognizes the contributions of Indians to early settlers. Boren says a formal apology is a step in the right direction.
The proposed bill does not include any monetary payments as part of the apology.
