Slippery roads played a role in a chain-reaction crash on Highway 412 Monday morning, sending several people to the hospital. It started when a car spun out and stalled on the bridge over the Verdigris River east of Tulsa. That car was hit by two other cars and a semi.
The News On 6's Steve Berg reports a fire truck responding to the accident caused another accident.
Tulsa Police Officer Jerad Lindsey was heading home from work when he found the crashed cars in the middle of the highway. Then, the situation got worse.
"We saw a semi coming. We yelled get out of the road, get out of the road," said Tulsa Police Officer Jerad Lindsey.
Unfortunately, the woman in the first car, 22-year-old Shannon Laney, was still inside. Officer Lindsey barely escaped.
"I turned to run and dove over the side railing to avoid getting run over myself. I rolled all the way down this hill before I was able to stop," said Lindsey.
But the icy situation wasn't over yet, as paramedic Michelle Brown and her partner with Pafford Ambulance found out.
"He said do you see those lights reflecting off the bridge, and I said yeah. And he said that's a solid sheet of ice, and I said yeah, you'd better slow down a little bit more," said paramedic Michelle Brown.
They stopped, but a fire truck behind them did not.
"Yeah, there was pretty much nothing we could do," said Brown.
The fire truck did quite a bit of damage to the back of the ambulance, but it was actually the next impact when they were shoved into the second fire truck, that was the most life-threatening.
"It was a big truck, very big truck," said Brown.
Brown's partner had glass in his head from the partition behind the driver's seat.
"And he was knocked out for a couple of minutes, but they released him. He's going to be okay," said Brown.
Her advice?
"Whenever they say it's going to be icy, stay home," said Brown.
22-year-old Shannon Laney is in serious condition with internal injuries.
