The annual Vigil of Love for Murdered and Missing People is set for Saturday. It's a group no one wants to be a member of. Yet, it is a chance for the families to get together with others who truly understand. The News On 6’s crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports the two women who started the event likely would have never met had it not been for the loss of their daughters.

Catherine Doak's daughter, Victoria Knight, was murdered at a Tulsa Cash and Flash. Sheila Owen's daughter, Latricia Fipps, disappeared five years ago. Now, the two women are as close as sisters and gain strength from each other because of their shared tragedies. They now organize the yearly Vigil of Love for Missing and Murdered People, so others in similar situations can find understanding.

"People who band together are stronger,” said Sheila Owen.

Catherine finally has some resolution. A DNA computer match found her daughter's killer this summer, three years after it happened.

Sheila is still waiting.

Her daughter disappeared on November 20th, five years ago and left behind her little boy she'd adopted only a year earlier. She says Tricia's ex-boyfriend had picked her up from work and has never been seen again.

"I think something happened that put him in a rage and he killed her. I know he did. I feel she is gone other than being in my heart because if she was alive, she would've escaped and made her way back home to her son,” said Sheila Owen.

Sheila and Catherine met through the Carole Sund Foundation, a group that offers reward money to families who need answers, but can't afford to put up a reward of their own. It's named for the woman who took her daughter and a friend to Yosemite Park in 1999 where they were murdered.

No matter how sympathetic others can be when they hear these stories, no on truly knows what these families are going through, and that's why they feel it's so important to get together and offer support and suggestions on how to make it through, day by day.

The vigil of love is Saturday. It starts at 1 p.m. at the Town and Country Church at 1055 North Garnett. Anyone with a missing or murdered loved one is welcome.

The organizers of the Vigil of Love want to thank the following people for their donations and support:
  • Absolute Balloons

  • Abco Rents

  • Sams

  • Subway

  • RC Cola

  • Town and Country Church

  • Eastman Curtis
