Veterans Day Parade Through Downtown

Tulsa has been honoring veterans with a parade on Veterans Day since the early 1920s. Originally it was Armistice Day commemorating the end of World War Ion November 11th, 1918. The News On 6â€™s Rick Wells, a veteran himself, reports after years of beginning at noon at 3rd and Detroit, this year brings changes to the parade.

Because of all the street construction downtown, the route was moved south a few blocks this year. There were bands and Junior ROTC Cadets from schools all over town.

Parades are great fun for kids. They get to see all kinds of stuff they don't see every day like military vehicles and lots and lots of motorcycles.

â€œFloats, bands, cars coming by, and people marching,â€ added Ethan Tidmore about the parade.

For veterans like Mike James, Veterans Day is about acknowledging service.

â€œIt's about the American people standing up for what they believe in like veterans have stood up for what they believe in,â€ said veteran Mike James.

For some, saying thank you comes with tears. One woman at the parade was crying over the loss of her boyfriend in Vietnam. She says itâ€™s something you never get over.

Flags of all sizes, beautiful old cars, beautiful people, and a beautiful day to hold a parade.

Organizers estimated a couple of thousand walkers, marchers and riders. Many more than that lined the streets letting veterans of all ages bask in a hail of thank yous.
