All eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 44 are now open. The interstate was closed nearly four hours Saturday afternoon after a driver damaged a road sign. That driver was pulling a trailer, lost control of his truck and hit a support pole for an overhead sign, said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers. The accident caused the road sign, which spans the width of the highway, to break off its base.

ODOT Crews had to call in a couple of cranes to remove the sign because they were afraid it would fall onto the highway.

“I'm a little nervous about the high wind right now. So for the safety of the traveling public we're going to close this down and evaluate what we need to do once we get a hold of it,” said Martin Stewart of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

The driver in the accident was not hurt.
