A bad reaction between two chemical bug sprays may be to blame for a suspicious, strong odor at a Tulsa apartment complex. Captain Larry Bowles of the Tulsa Fire Department says the complex, located at 11th and Quincy, had recently sprayed for bugs using two different chemicals. He says those chemicals may have caused a reaction creating a strong, ammonia like smell throughout the apartment complex.
A resident of the apartments called 911 around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday saying an odor in the complex was causing their eyes, throat and lungs to burn. Tulsa firefighters responded to the call and immediately evacuated the building.
Twelve people were evacuated from the apartment complex, five were evaluated by paramedics and one woman was taken to the hospital, her condition is not known at this time.
Hazmat team performed air quality checks to determine what was causing the chemical odor. Residents feared it might be a meth lab, but fire officials say there is no sign of a meth lab at this point.
