OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A federal transportation official has told members of an Oklahoma state House subcommittee that toll roads may be the way to go when it comes to paying for new roads.
Assistant U.S. Secretary of Transportation Tyler Duvall didn't specifically recommend more toll roads but says it's unrealistic to think roads can be built on a pay-as-you-go system using taxes on fuel.
And Duvall says using fuel taxes to pay for highway construction won't be very productive in the future because of efforts to reduce fuel consumption.
Oklahoma Transportation Director Gary Ridley says Oklahoma already accounts for 13% of the toll roads in the nation.
