Two people are killed trying to get help for a broken down car. It happened just after 9:30 p.m. Sunday on the Broken Arrow Expressway near Garnett. Police say 20-year-old William Strawn and 18-year-old Elyse Cannon were driving eastbound on the expressway when their car stalled or ran out of gas. Someone called police about a stranded motorist and an officer was on the way, but before the officer arrived the couple decided to flag down some help.
While attempting to get help Strawn and Cannon were hit by two cars. Police say they were first hit by a woman driving a Mercury Sable, then by a man driving a Honda. The driver of the Sable told police the couple appeared in her lane out of nowhere.
Strawn and Cannon died at the scene.
The eastbound lanes of the Broken Arrow Expressway were closed between U.S. Highway 169 and the Garnett exit for several hours while the medical examiner investigated the scene.
Police don't believe the drivers of the Sable and Honda did anything wrong.
