DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ An explosion and fire caused part of a three-story apartment building's roof to collapse early Thursday, but it was unclear if anyone was injured, officials said.
Firefighters were walking inside the charred rubble in the building, picking up burnt wood and debris looking for victims. Water poured out of parts of the building as crews tried to tamp down a few hot spots that were producing smoke.
An explosion sparked the fire, a Broward County sheriff's spokeswoman said. But shortly after it started, the blaze was put out. It was not clear if any residents were trapped when about half of the building's roof collapsed.
Deerfield Beach is a city just north of Fort Lauderdale.
