OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Brego, a 17-1 longshot running in only his third stakes race, surged clear in the final stages to capture the $150,000 DeBartolo Memorial Breeders' Cup Handicap at Remington Park.

Brego, a 5-year-old California-bred son of In Excess, stayed in the middle of the 11-horse field for much of yesterday's 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and up before making his move under jockey Richard Eramia with a half-mile left.

Brego took the lead in the final furlong and won by a length over Almost Certain, with Smooth Bid third, another half-length back.

The winning time was 1:48.51 on firm turf. Brego, trained by Bruce Jackson, recorded his fourth win in 19 lifetime starts and won $90,000 for his owner, Paul J. Varni of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
