The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a new high profile partner in their push for seatbelt safety. Miss Oklahoma 2007, MacKenna Smith, spent the day riding along on real-life traffic stops Thursday. She's sharing her testimony with drivers who are caught driving without their seatbelts. MacKenna says she chose seatbelt safety as her platform because of her own experience.
“I am a personal story of survival because of my seatbelt,†said Miss Oklahoma MacKenna Smith. “I wouldn't be standing here today had I not been wearing my seatbelt the day that I was in a head-on collision on I-35."
Statistics show most deadly crashes happen at night. Troopers say it is because more people don't buckle up after dark.
