New outfits were carefully selected, and hair was neatly combed as Tulsa Public School students headed back to the classroom. The News On 6’s Carina Sonn reports Monday was the first day of school for students in the state's largest district.

From the youngest students to the seniors in high school, even the school principal, butterflies were in the bellies of everyone at Edison Preparatory.

"I've been excited and I was nervous yesterday. I was up late last night," said sixth grader Paige Dowdy.

Paige Dowdy is a sixth grader at the middle school. Her family just moved to town.

"We moved from Bristow to Tulsa so we're new to the area and getting them in school and excited," said new Tulsa resident Tim Thomas.

New school, new town, for some a new country, Arne Clodius is a foreign exchange student and has only been in Tulsa for a week.

"In Germany, I know the town and so on, but here it's a new town, new country, new school, new style, everything is different," said foreign exchange student Arne Clodius.

There are more than 2,000 middle and high school students at Edison. Although traffic both outside and in are always an issue instructors were on hand to guide the occasional straggler.

"The new kids were finding their way. They were easier to spot because they were staring and looking around, but I think it went really smoothly this morning,” said Edison interim principal Stacey Vernon. “We're hoping for a great year."

A brand new school year, means a fresh start for everyone.

"I'm scared that I'm not going to be able to find all my classes or be late or something," Dowdy said.
