HOMINY, Okla. (AP) -- An inmate at a northeast Oklahoma prison was stabbed to death after a fight broke out among several inmates, prison officials said. John Pierce, 42, was stabbed several times in the chest and torso during the altercation Friday and died at the scene, said Mike Bolt, a spokesman for the R.B. "Dick" Conner Correctional Center in Hominy.
The murder weapon was likely a sharp object fashioned by an inmate, said Jim Rabon, a spokesman for the Oklahoma Corrections Department.
The medium-security prison, which houses about 1,200 inmates, was briefly locked down after the stabbing, Bolt said.
Five inmates, including Pierce, were involved in the melee, Bolt said.
The four inmates have been segregated from the general population while the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation looks into the incident.
Pierce was serving a life prison sentence for a first-degree murder conviction out of McIntosh County in 1993, prison records show.
