Pokes Fans Show Support For Verplank

Orange was the dominate color at Southern Hills Saturday. OSU fans were out in force to support a former Cowboy and local favorite. Unfortunately, Scott Verplank couldn't channel all that support into success on the course. Heâ€™s pretty much playing himself out of contention. The News On 6â€™s Chris Wright reports still, Pokes fans made the most of the opportunity to show their colors.

It was impossible to avoid Saturday, there was orange everywhere you looked.

"Love that orange, go Cowboys," said one golf fan.

OSU Alumni were all over the course cheering on their man, Scott Verplank.

"He's doing very well, we're proud of him," said a Verplank fan.

"It doesn't get any better than that," said another golf fan. "Hope he's still there tomorrow."

The OSU contingent even got the attention of national broadcasters, who pointed out the Pokes fans during their broadcast Saturday. Not to be outdone a diehard Tiger Woods fan darned a full length tiger outfit. His buddies even dressed as tiger chasers.

"People keep asking if we're crazy, or hot," the man in the tiger suit said.

And OU fans, while in the minority, still tried to make their voice heard.

"The OU fans haven't been very vocal today. I think OSU fans have us out numbered, so they're vocal, and they're loyal to their school as they always are, so I admire them," one Sooner and golf fan said.

But the day, and the gallery belonged to Verplank, and despite his disappointing performance the Cowboy faithful are still holding out hope for Sunday.

"I think come tomorrow he's going to pull out the big stick and get it done," said one fan.

Verplank will have to come from way back now to get it done, heâ€™s seven shots behind Tiger Woods headed in to Sunday's final round.
