WASHINGTON (AP) _ The post office is launching a new series of stamps featuring the flags of the U.S. states and territories.
The first 10 of the 60 planned flag stamps will be issued next spring and a second set will be released in the fall.
``These beautiful symbols of democracy are educational treasures that make for a great introduction to stamp collecting,'' said Postmaster General John Potter.
The first stamps to be issued will feature the Stars and Stripes and the flags of Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut and Delaware.
In addition to the flag each stamp will feature a scene related to the state itself, such as an Alabama shrimp boat, Arizona cactus, Colorado mountains and a Delaware beach.
The post office issued a set of 50 state flag stamps in 1976.
