A lot of golf fans are keeping an eye on how Tiger Woods is doing at the PGA Championship. One Green Country teenager got about the best view of Tiger in action, he was inside the ropes alongside the best golfer in the world. News On 6 anchor Craig day reports the young golfer says it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
When Tiger Woods played his first round at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, an Owasso teenager was right along side. Out of more than 150 golfers in the tournament, Rob Shoup was assigned to Tiger Woods' group.
"Luck of the draw,†said Owasso resident Rob Shoup. “I don't know how lucky you've got to be to get that, but I was pretty darn lucky that day."
Shoup was what's called a standard bearer, basically the guy that holds a sign up with the names and scores of his group of golfers. So everywhere Tiger’s group went, Shoup went too.
"A couple of times I could have touched him, but I decided that wouldn't have been a good thing to do," Shoup said.
Shoup says the pro-golfers were pretty much all business, but it was neat seeing their talent up close.
"I didn't really realize it, but when I got out on that first tee box I was nervous as heck," said Shoup.
But after a couple holes he got used to being in front of all those people, and just concentrated on the job.
"It was awesome, I mean that's just a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to do that with the number one player in the world and the most dominating golfer ever," Shoup said.
Shoup left with one of Tiger's golf balls and one autographed by Bob Tway, who was also in his group. The Owasso teen also took away a lot of memories.
"Just kind of shocked,†he said. “To be with the number one player in the world, that's pretty neat."
Shoup says he'd like to see Tiger do well in the tournament, but he's really pulling for the ex-Oklahoma State golfers, including Scott Verplank who took the lead in the tournament Friday.
