The thousands of golf fans who come to Tulsa for the PGA Championship will want a little something to take home with them. The News On 6’s Rick Wells reports the merchandise experts out at Southern Hills are getting ready for them.
They are stocking the shelves in the merchandise tent at the PGA Championship.
"It's my little project for the week," said PGA Director of Merchandise Susan Hickman.
There’s nothing little about it, it’s a 36,000 square foot retail store dedicated to PGA souvenir merchandise.
"It has that beautiful upscale appeal to it," Hickman said.
And more than that, it is also bigger than most stores in the mall.
"It's like building any store in any mall in America, the difference is this one closes in one week," said Hickman.
Hats and shirts are always big items, but there is more to this than just that.
"Accessories will sell well too, money clips, bag tags, t-packs, duffel bags, there's something here for everybody," John Lawrence of Tournament Solutions said.
John Lawrence works for Tournament Solutions, one of the companies bringing in all the merchandise. He says you can be inside the store and tell when golf’s biggest names are finished playing.
"When Tiger walks off the golf course a wave of people will come through here,†Lawrence said. “It's called the Tiger Factor, same thing with Mickelson."
The merchandisers say their tent also serves as a cooling station for many people during the heat of the day, but it is always busiest at the end of the day.
