The Creek County Sheriff's Office has released the names of the two victims in Thursday night's fatal fire near Sapulpa. Twenty-seven-year-old Jay Benson and his girlfriend, 34-year-old Cynthia Gagat were both killed when fire engulfed Benson's trailer about 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Friends say Benson worked a night shift and was probably sleeping when the fire started.
The Oklahoma Fire Marshal's office has determined the probable cause of the fire was electrical. Oklahoma Fire Marshal's investigator Terry Smith says the trailer had several places with substandard wiring.
Friends say Benson had recently overcome a lot of personal problems and say it's especially sad that he was killed when his life was turning around for the better.
"Been a great guy. Anytime I ever needed anything, he was there to help me out. I borrowed a drill from him two days ago," said neighbor, Jason Hall. "He was a couple of years younger than me, which is that much more tragic because the guy's in his mid-20's, had a long life ahead of him."
Other tenants who are renting in the park say they've complained about problems with the electrical wiring in their trailers.
