Mothers Against Drunk Driving is reminding drivers to celebrate responsibly this holiday season. Their 21st Annual Tie One On For Safety Campaign officially kicked off on Tuesday at 300 N. Denver. Area law enforcement joined MADD for a special red ribbon tying demonstration at the David L. Moss Criminal Justice Center.
The ribbons are a symbol of safety to remind partygoers to think before they get behind the wheel. It's easy to make the life-saving pledge. All you have to do is tie a red ribbon on your keys and vehicle.
Last year more than 17,000 people were killed by drunk drivers. Of those, 263 were Oklahomans.
“Unfortunately the truth is you or someone you know will be impacted by this grievous crime. Let us not wait until for another 17 or 18-thousand people to deaths to happen before we act,†said Tulsa County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Hastings Siegfried.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers have set up roadside safety checkpoints. They'll be looking for drunk drivers as well as people not wearing their seatbelts.
