The Tulsa Police family has lost two well respected members. Retired officer George Wallace and his wife, Sue, a current officer, both died in a car accident over the weekend. The News on 6’s crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports police call the crash a tragic accident.
George, Sue and Sue's brother were out Saturday evening going to dinner in Glenpool when they pulled out in front of a truck. The couple in the truck was not hurt.
Monday evening's squad meeting was full of heavy hearts, as fellow officers of Sue Wallace discussed, not the shift ahead of them, but the upcoming funeral of Sue and her husband, George. Officers wear black bands across their badges, as a sign of mourning and the flags in front of the police station fly at half-staff to honor the current and retired officer.
In her 21 years with the TPD, Sue had worked patrol, street crimes, narcotics buys and put many people behind bars.
"Good cop, very much admired by her peers and the squad room is a lot emptier,†said Tulsa Police Sgt. Jim Clark.
Her husband, George, retired after 26 years on the force and was known as a corporal who was patient and kind.
“Probably George, more than anybody, taught me to really look at people who work for you as people, not numbers, not badge numbers and to look out for them at each shift,†added Tulsa Police Sgt. Jim Clark.
Sue's brother and mother are still a bit in shock, over the suddenness of the deaths. Sue's brother was in the car at the time of the crash and says it happened in a blink.
"Pretty rough being there and not being able to help anybody, helpless, hopeless,†said Sue’s brother, Faren Bunny.
The family says Sue loved to laugh and could tell a great story. She had a 21-year-old daughter and George had two grown children of his own.
"When you love somebody, you tell them more and hug them harder. You don't get a second chance. Once they're gone, they're gone," said Faren Bunny, Sue’s brother.
There is a wake Tuesday night for the Wallaces from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Floral Haven at 6500 S.129th East Ave. Their funeral will be Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at The Church on the Move at 1003 N. 129th East Avenue. It will include a full police honor guard.
