20-year-old Billy Perkins is behind bars after leading authorities on a chase that started in Tulsa and ended near the Kansas border late Monday.

Tulsa Police say they tried to stop a car just before 10 PM Monday for a stolen tag. Officers say Perkins took off toward I-244 and eventually toward Bartlesville. Police ended up calling in a helicopter for the long pursuit.

The suspect told authorities he had good reason not to stop. Tulsa Police Capt Nick Hondros: “For the majority of the chase we had contact with the suspect on the phone. He stated he was an ex-convict and he wasn't going back to prison.”

Authorities say the chase stayed at relatively low speeds, which made it easy for Perkins to avoid stop sticks. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers were able to stop the car about 8 miles south of the Kansas line.

Perkins faces charges of eluding an officer and having a stolen vehicle.
