Going back to school without your cell phone

Students in several Tulsa area school districts are heading back to class this week. And as you finish up your back to school shopping there may be a few high-tech items you might want to leave off the list.

News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson has an update on which gadgets are allowed on school campuses.

The ringing of a cell phone is exactly the kind of interruption principals and teachers all over Tulsa County are trying to avoid. With more and more teenagers carrying cell phones these days, more school districts have policies against them.

That's because modern cell phones aren't just for talking. New phones can connect to the Internet, send text messages, and take pictures and video clips.

Radio Shack manager Dave Miller says cell phones are some of his most popular items among teens. But that popularity is becoming an annoying ring in many school district's ear.

Jenks students will head back to class with a new policy aimed at limiting cell phone use at school. Jenks High School principal Mike Means: "Bottom line our policy is during the school hours they canâ€™t have them on them. Now they can bring it in before school and put in their locker. And that's fine. Pick it up out of their locker after school is over."

Jenks administrators had to change the policy to combat a high tech cheating scam.
