The Tulsa Area United Way announced its fundraising goal for 2004 Tuesday. The nearly $21-million goal is more conservative than last year, which was almost $23-million.

The goal was set after nearly 300 volunteers spent more than eight thousand hours looking into the community's needs and researching the effectiveness of local programs. They say this year's goal is just a starting point.

Tulsa Area United Way president Kathleen Coan: "This is just an estimate. We hope we can blow straight through this number. This community has always, always amazed me.â€

United Way's 2004 campaign kicks off with the annual "Day of Caring" on September 10th.
