OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Gov. Brad Henry wants university presidents to consider a bond issue package that is less expensive than the existing $500 million proposal for capital improvements on college campuses.

Paul Sund, Henry's communications director, said Friday that the governor is concerned there are too many demands on the state budget for the next fiscal year.

In response, Oklahoma university presidents have outlined how much each campus would receive if they were all cut by the same percentage. Their alternative packages range from $200 million to $450 million.

Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Chancellor Paul Risser wrote to the governor in support of the original packaging, saying "the $500 million request is sound and should not be modified."

"Although the target amount is an ambitious one in our state's current funding climate, we urge you to support the projects at the full requested amount," Risser wrote.

The initial package includes proposals for 44 projects to build or renovate classrooms and performing arts halls and 11 science labs.

University of Oklahoma president David Boren said the smallest amount he would want to see is $300 million.

"If it got much smaller, it might be better to put this off until next year," Boren said.

If a package receives support from the Legislature and Henry, it would be placed on the November ballot for consideration by voters.

Questions on a lottery, a gaming bill and an increased tobacco tax are already on the ballot, which also includes the presidential election, several state legislative races and a constitutional amendment to bar same-sex marriages.
