New victims speak out about their run-ins with a counterfeit cop. Two more people say they were harassed by Bryon Brown, now charged with pretending to be a police officer.
Just like the witnesses the News on 6 talked to last week, these people say Bryon Brown flashed a badge and identified himself as an officer. News on 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright says Chris Griffin was a Tulsa Police officer until he quit to do police work for the United Nations.
He says he had two run-ins with Bryon Brown at the Quik Trip at 61st and Memorial. The first time, Griffin says he doubted Brown was a real officer. "He has a big goatee and I didn't think troopers could have goatees, but he had an OHP hat and shirt and a gun belt."
The second time, Griffin says Brown harassed him and three people in the car with him. "He walks over to the car and asks for our identification and I said, are you a cop and he said, yes, I'm a cop and he pointed to his waist and he did have on some sort of badge at the time."
Griffin says an OHP trooper, working security at the Quik Trip, was with Brown both times and never said anything, which made them think Brown was legit. These incidents didn't just happen this winter, but as far back as May.
The News on 6 has learned he told someone else he was a cop. They reported it to police but they say nothing was done. Vanessa Barnes says they called a tow company to tow cars at a baseball game last spring and Brown showed up in a tow truck, badge in hand. "He was showing us his badge and said he's a US Marshal and he'd help us if we needed it. And, then when people wanted their car unhooked, he wouldn't do it unless they paid him money.â€
Barnes says she filled out a police report so, she was shocked to see Brown still at it nine months later. Tulsa Police say there wasn't enough evidence to file charges for the May incident. They did get charges filed for a November incident, but say Brown kept doing it and was arrested again last week. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper, who was seen with Brown, tells us he didn't know Brown was a fake.
The victims we interviewed last week told us Brown was working security at Quik Trip when they encountered him and we reported that. However, we've learned he did not actually work as a security guard for Quik Trip; he was simply hanging out there, pretending to work security.
