Teen suicide is on the rise in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Poison Control Center has received 97 calls thought to be suicide-related so far this year. That's 17% higher than this time last year.
The center says residents between the ages of 13 and 20 are using easily obtainable prescription drugs. There are also over-the-counter pain medicines, like antihistamines, and cold medicines. But officials say they've also seen the use of prescribed sedatives, antibiotics, muscle relaxers and stimulants.
Authorities say suicide attempts are often preceded by major depression, anxiety and alcohol or drug use.
