(Washington-AP) -- A bronze bust of former Speaker of the House Carl Albert will be unveiled today in the US Capitol.
Albert was a longtime US Representative for the state of Oklahoma. He eventually became the 46th Speaker of the US House.
The McAlester native enlisted in the US Army in 1941 and earned a Bronze Medal. Upon his discharge in 1946, Albert was elected to Congress.
He retired 30 years later as Speaker.
Albert passed away in February 2000 at the age of 91.
Congressman Ernest Istook calls Albert an extraordinary man.
He says the statue is an honor for Albert, but also for all Oklahomans.
The governor, first lady and many other dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony.
