He brought beloved characters like "The Cat and the Hat" to life, and told the world about Green Eggs and Ham. And in honor of Doctor Seuss' 100th birthday, a number of folks took time out Tuesday to read to area school kids.
Doctor Seuss' real name was Theodor Geisel, and he didn't start out as a children's author. The characters millions grew to love were actually illustrated first in patriotic films, political cartoons and even used to pedal bug spray and motor oil. But it was his way with crazy rhymes that captured children's imagination.
His magical books taught generations of children to read. Prominent Tulsan Eddie Faye Gates read to children Tuesday at the Crosstown Learning Center as part of the "Read Across America" program to promote literacy.
Gates even donned the "hat" famous for being worn by a "cat".
