A rare treasure found in the Tulsa area will help many families in need this holiday.
A South African gold Krugerrand coin worth about $400 was left in a Salvation Army kettle in Owasso.
It was quite a surprise to those counting the donations. Major Marshall Gesner with the Salvation Army: "We were counting yesterday's kettle income and the machine kicked out a Krugerrand. It's sized to take US coins, so it kicked this thing out and our finance department looked and said what is this and asked me if I ever seen one before and I said no, but I can tell you what it is."
Major Gesner says the rare South African coin was wrapped in a dollar bill, so you couldn't tell what it was.
The tradition of dropping Krugerrands into kettles dates back 15 years, but this is the first time it has happened in the Tulsa area.
