(Eufaula-AP) -- Eufaula Police Chief Larry Osmond has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of a criminal case against him.

Osmond was suspended with pay after a multicounty grand jury indicted him and his wife, Carol, on charges of child stealing and perjury.

The indictment was unsealed in McIntosh County District Court on Thursday, the day Mayor Dean Smith said Osmond's suspension became effective.

Larry Osmond is free on 35-thousand dollars bond and his wife is free on 20-thousand dollars bond.

The Osmonds allegedly helped hide their granddaughter from her paternal grandparents, who had been awarded custody by a Texas court.

The indictments also allege the Osmonds helped provide board for the child and her mother, Shannon Luster, and also provided Luster with a cellular phone.

Lieutenant Charles Hammett has been made acting chief.
