(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma City officials say a Douglass High School senior was shot Thursday afternoon while watching a fight outside the gym after school.

The 18-year-old student was in fair condition at OU Medical Center.

A school official says a former Douglass student and her boyfriend came to campus after classes ended for the day. Officials say the visitors started a fight with students, and an 18-year-old boy shot a handgun into the air.

A bullet injured a bystander.

Oklahoma City police say about 50 students were gathered outside the gym. Police are searching for the gunman, who drove away from the school.

Paramedics first thought the victim had been punched during a fight. Hospital officials confirmed the victim had been shot once in the face.

The girl's name was not released.

It was the first school shooting in the Oklahoma City School District since 1992.
