(Stone Bluff-AP) -- The state Department of Environmental Quality is getting closer to cleaning up a former hazardous waste storage and recycling facility.
Investigators plan to start mapping out cleanup of the site in Stone Bluff next month. DEQ believes more than 33,000 gallons of hazardous waste remain on site.
The agency's reached an agreement with a financially troubled insurance company to provide 175-thousand dollars to start waste removal.
Chief Supply Company and later Greenway Environmental had operations in Stone Bluff. Chief Supply ceased operations after a 1997 explosion and fire that killed one worker. Greenway replaced Chief after the fatal accident. Greenway ceased operations in June 2000.
