(Stilwell-AP) -- Stilwell Public Schools will receive a federal grant for integrating character education into the curriculum.
The US Education Department announced that the district will receive more than $332,000 this year, the first of four annual grants to the district totaling more than $1-million.
Stilwell teachers will learn how to use a literature-based character education program that teaches respect, courage, diligence and patience.
The district's federal programs director Mary Fletcher says the program will be implemented next school year.
About 850 students in prekindergarten through eighth grade will be the target of the curriculum.
Fletcher says the money primarily will be used to prove that character education leads to better grades.
It also will allow teachers to buy more books for their classroom libraries.
