(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Oklahoma advocates for wind power say massive power outages in the northeast and increased focus on the nation's outdated power supply network could work in their favor.

Advocates for wind power say the nation's electric grid could be improved if windy, rural areas were connected to metropolitan areas.

Officials also say expanding the transmission grid through areas that have the potential for wind power could lead improve the chances of wind power development.

In the past energy developers had hesitated to use wind power because the transmission line to rural areas could cost more than the money generated from the energy.

Oklahoma is already on its way to expanding the use of wind power. The Corporation Commission recently approved a plan that would give Oklahoma Gas and Energy customers a fuel credit for choosing wind power.
