(Tulsa-AP) -- Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe says a new bill will help clean up the Tar Creek Superfund Site.

The measure requires the government to develop criteria for the safe use of mining waste called chat.

Millions of tons of chat remains at the former lead and zinc mining site in northeastern Oklahoma.

The waste has been linked to lead contamination in the yards of local residents in the towns of Picher and Cardin.

Inhofe says the bill will help expand the use of the waste for commercial applications.
